Belgian operator VLM Airlines has launched weekday flights between Southampton, Antwerp and on to Hamburg. Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany, is one of Europe’s busiest international ports, with a 2014 throughput of 145.7m tonnes. Appealing to both business and leisure travellers, Hamburg is a major industrial and media centre, with local employers including Airbus, Blohm + Voss and Der Spiegel.
Dave Lees, Managing Director of Southampton Airport, said: “Not only does this new route suit many businesses in the area and locals wanting to visit these two beautiful cities, the new flights are perfect for those in Germany and Belgium starting cruises from Southampton, which is the cruise capital for northern Europe.”
Arthur White, CEO of VLM Airlines, added: “Southampton is a great destination for travellers involved in the maritime industry. Additionally the leisure and tourism opportunities make this a really good fit for our network of linking the major ports of Europe.”
Today (Monday 27 April) VLM launches new flights to Waterford, in the South of Ireland, from both Birmingham and Luton airports. (See BTN 16 March) www.vlm.com

This new service will be a challenge for SOU and HAM (via ARN). Most recently Flybe tried twice to open a direct service to the city pair but failed due to poor bookings. Cruise lines ask for direct links and morning departures for their cruise passengers. A one stop service will be hard to sell, with some 2 hrs stay in Antwerp. So good luck for the airport teams to sell this new VLM link.
