British airports busy year

As predicted by  BTN  last week (see Luton Airport record year) Britain’s airports have been quick to announce their passenger throughputs in 2014.

For most an annual record has been set.

Aberdeen moved 3,766,472, an 8% rise, 572,384 by helicopter.

Edinburgh totalled 10,174,684 (+4%) with the Commonwealth Games a major contributory factor.

Gatwick continued its growth with 35.4m passengers, a rise of 7.6%.

Glasgow Airport recorded its busiest 12 months since 2008 with more than 7.7m passengers passing through its doors, up 4.8%.

Heathrow has reported a 1.4% increase in passenger numbers for 2014 to 73.4m.

London City, which likes to point out it is the only airport actually in London, welcomed 3.65m passengers in the 12 months, up 8%.

Newquay reached 220,000 a big increase from the previous year and but still well below the 2008 record 431,000.  Some of the rise is attributed to problems with rail to Cornwall in the spring.

Stansted did not quite break 20m (19,978,766) but it was up 12%, although still well short of the 23.8m of 2007.

Frankfurt Airport achieved a new record in 2014 as well.   Some 59.57m passengers passed through Germany’s largest aviation hub in 2014, an increase of 2.6% year-on-year.
