The Government of Scotland has officially purchased Glasgow Prestwick Airport from New Zealand investment company Infratil (see BTN 14 October).
This was confirmed last week, the day before details of the Scottish referendum were announced.
The public ownership of Prestwick has raised questions of competition with Glasgow International Airport and whether there will be a level playing field in terms of competition for the future.
Glasgow Chamber of Commerce said in a letter to Scottish Government ministers that the government’s decision to buy Prestwick "may have detrimental effects" for the city. It has requested ministers to explain their aviation strategy and "clarify the competitive playing field" for Glasgow Airport.
Stuart Patrick, Chief Executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, wrote to Nicola Sturgeon, the Deputy First Minister, seeking assurances that Prestwick should not be given preferential treatment.
"In buying Glasgow Prestwick Airport, the Scottish ministers now have a direct stake in the performance of the airport industry in the central belt of Scotland", he wrote.
"We are concerned that this may have detrimental effects on the performance of Glasgow International Airport." www.glasgowprestwick.com
