Bangkok flights

You only have to look at the OAG schedules from Heathrow to Bangkok to realise how competitive the market is.  Not only do both British Airways and Thai Airways offer non-stop 11hrs 30mins flights but all the airlines of the Gulf region have connecting services.  Most European carriers also provide services via their main European hubs.

It is therefore surprising to learn that Thai Airways has confirmed it will postpone its much heralded A380 service on the Bangkok to London route only announced last month (see BTN 23 June).

The superjumbo had been scheduled to operate one of Thai's daily flights with effect from 1 December.  But the carrier now says that the A380 will not serve the London route until 30 October of next year – a delay of 11 months with no serious explanation other than "important technical modifications".  Currently the twice daily service will be operated by B747s and A340-600s.

In the meantime Eva Air, which has fifth freedom rights to Taiwan, has introduced its prestigious new Royal Laurel Class available on Heathrow departures.  It features 38 seats in a reverse herringbone layout, enabling passengers at windows to look out without turning and those in the centre to easily dine and talk with travel companions. www.evaair.com www.thaiairways.com
