The new long-haul hand baggage only (HBO) fare (BTN 5 March) being launched by British Airways in conjunction with its transatlantic joint business partner airlines American Airlines, Finnair and Iberia went on sale last week.
BA services involved include flights between London and Austin, Boston, Delhi, Denver, Dubai, Hong Kong, Oakland, Philadelphia, Punta Cana and Singapore. The fares cost up to £60 less than the standard returns.
BA says passengers who select the new ‘Basic’ fare will be eligible for improved in-flight meals in the World Traveller cabin and use Avios as part payment. Each passenger has a free two-piece hand baggage allowance.
Chief commercial officer Adam Daniels said: “Customers’ needs vary from trip to trip and we need to ensure the fares reflect those differing needs so customers can select the best option.
“Someone travelling for a short meeting who isn’t planning to check-in a bag and is happy for us to allocate a seat will appreciate a lower fare.”
‘Basic’ fare passengers will have their seats allocated at check-in or can pay to choose their own. Silver and Gold Executive Club members can continue to select seats when they book and Bronze members seven days in advance as they do now.
