London City new-look departures

Work is progressing fast on the first new departure gates installed at London City Airport (LCY) as part of its upgrade programme. The gates could be ready for use shortly.

CEO Declan Collier said: “We know the terminal has become pretty busy and we need to create more room.

Departure gates 1-10 are being completely refurbished in a move that will give passengers and staff 84% more space and a modern, open-plan layout.

“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to install more seats, more choice and more comfort, and we’re delighted to announce the first phase is ready to go.”

The programme has already seen the opening of a new First Class lounge at LCY (see BTN 9 May) as the airport takes steps to handle growing demand.

LCY welcomed a record 4,319,521 passengers in 2015, an 18.38% increase over 2014, and its fifth consecutive year of growth to beat the previous record of 3.6m.

Figures were boosted by British Airways’ busiest ever summer and the first full year of services by Flybe.

There were also added rotations on a number of routes such as Milan (Alitalia) and Luxembourg (Lux Air); and new destinations including Basel and Bern (Skywork), Cork (Cityjet), and Mykonos and Santorini (British Airways).
