Minister hails Newquay routes

Aviation Minister Robert Goodwill has welcomed new domestic routes that will start next spring from Newquay and Exeter airports to Leeds Bradford and Norwich.

Chancellor George Osborne announced in last month's Spending Review that 11 successful bidders across the UK had been awarded support from the Government's regional air connectivity fund.

Mr Goodwill said: “Newquay and Exeter airports are vital engines for  the South West’s economy, connecting the UK and creating opportunities.”

The bidding competition for start-up aid was open to airports with fewer than 5m passengers a year. The scheme is designed to allow air routes that are not currently commercially viable today to be introduced early, giving time for airlines to build passenger numbers and deliver more sustainable services. The fund already supports strategic routes to London from Newquay and Dundee.

The announcement is the latest piece of good news for Newquay in recent weeks. The airport is abolishing its £5 development fee, which has been levied on departing passengers since 2005, and Ryanair is returning in March with two new routes to Frankfurt and Alicante.

There will also be an improved service on the Gatwick – Newquay route from next summer utilising an Embraer jet.    www.newquaycornwallairport.com
