Alaska joins Premium trend

Priority boarding and 3in-4in more legroom compared with a standard Economy seat are being promised by Alaska Airlines when it rolls-out a Premium Class section beginning next year.

Members of the carrier’s Mileage Plan loyalty club will be offered the upgrade free when booking or on the day of travel depending on status and fare purchased.

Alaska plans to retrofit up to 60 aircraft with the Premium Class section by the end of 2016 and the remainder of its 737-800, 737-900 and 737-900ER fleet by the end of 2017.

The upgrade option will also be available on Embraer 175s operated by SkyWest, which are configured with 12 seats in Premium Class.

Preferred Plus seating, currently available for purchase at check-in for bulkhead and exit rows, will continue to be offered on Alaska 737-400s and 737-700s.

Seats in Premium Class will have a pitch of at least 35in compared to 31in-32in in the rest of the main cabin. At the same time, seat pitch in First Class will be increased from 36in to 41in.

The changes are part of a wider programme which has seen Alaska Airlines making significant improvements to its fleet.  www.alaskaair.com
