Spring in £4.2bn A320 order

Surging demand for air travel in China has brought an order from Shanghai-based Spring Airlines for 60 Airbus A320neo (new engine option) family jets, worth US$6.3bn (£4.2bn).

The carrier, one of China’s biggest, is scheduled to take delivery of the 45 A320s and 15 A321s between 2019 and 2023, boosting its capacity by 158%, reflecting forecasts that the number of people travelling by air within China and overseas will triple over the next few years.

A Spring company spokesman said the aircraft would improve the fuel efficiency of the fleet and also help the airline to break into new markets.

The order also brings into focus the intense rivalry between Airbus and Boeing for the booming market for upgraded narrow-body aircraft as Chinese carriers continue to expand. Analysts say the market could need more than 6,000 planes over the next 20 years.

Airbus has boosted its position in China by assembling A320s there and plans to build a completion centre for the A330.

Boeing has responded with an to build an aircraft completion plant of its own, its first outside the US, in partnership with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Airlines
