Lisbon hotel takes top award

The Pousada de Lisboa, the newest unit of the Pestana Group hotels, was awarded "Best Small and Exclusive New Hotel" ("Best Newcomer"), by Condé Nast Johansens 2016, in a ceremony that took place in London last week.  BTN  featured the property on  21 September, even then suspecting it was something special.

Situated on the edge of Praҁa do Comércio square, it was once the Ministry of Internal Affairs and also housed the office of Salazar – the country’s infamous dictator.  His accommodation has been turned into a sumptuous suite overlooking the square with access via a grand staircase (or you can take a lift).  The 90-bedroom boutique property opened in June and is quickly establishing itself as the place to stay in Lisbon.  You could not find a more convenient spot nor a better executed conversion.

"The prize won by Lisbon Hotel is a way to recognize and celebrate your excellence, based on recommendations and questionnaires conducted to guests, as well as reports of regional inspectors appointed by Condé Nast Johansens," says the citation.  On the ground floor the hotel restaurant offers superb regional cuisine.  Prices by London standards are remarkably attractive, from €185 bed and breakfast at this time of the year.  Lisbon was 26°C last Friday.  www.pestana.com/uk/hotel/pousada-lisboa
