Liverpool Airport expands

Once it had links to London but at the same time was one of the UK’s shabbiest airports.  Liverpool Airport has come a long way since those times.

Last week it was announced that long time investor The Peel Group had gained 100% control of the airport and had agreed funding for a five-year development programme of the renamed John Lennon Liverpool Airport.  Whilst not back at 2007 levels, when it moved nearly 5.5m passengers, the airport is seeing sustained growth and should easily top 4m passengers this year.  A new route to Amsterdam was recently opened (see BTN 6 April).

The Peel Group is a private real estate, media, transport and infrastructure investment company and the owner of the Manchester Ship Canal with its head office at the Trafford Centre, which it developed.  It also owns the small general aviation airport at Salford, now known as Manchester City Airport (formerly Barton) and also Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, and Durham Tees Valley Airport between Darlington and Middlesbrough.   www.liverpoolairport.com
