Contrary to some reports the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has not stopped, according to the Malaysian Transport Minister. Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said that the search had widened.
“There were some news reports that we stopped the search. It is not true,” he said. “We are committed to continuing the search in the southern Indian Ocean,” he added.
The Boeing 777 went missing on 7 March 2014. Since that time no wreckage of any sort has been found.
However, Liow said that if there were no new leads by the end of the additional search zone, then the search might not continue.
“We decided at a tripartite meeting between Australia, Malaysia and China that if we cannot find anything in the current search area of 60,000sq km, we will expand it to another 60,000sq km.”
What happens if still nothing is found in the extended area remains to be determined but the new area will take around 12 months to reconnoitre based on the previous time scale. www.jacc.gov.au
