This opening BTN for 2104 comes with more than a tinge of sadness as I have to report the loss of Gwyn Hughes, the former Managing Director of P&O and a personal friend (Malcolm Ginsberg writes).
He passed away just before Christmas at the London Clinic where his cheerful countenance was always to the fore through a very difficult illness. Prince Phillip was also a patient at the same time. Always a good subject for conversation. Neither caused the staff any problems.
During his 20 years at P&O he played a major role as it developed into one of the world’s great cruise lines finally becoming part of the Miami-based Carnival Corporation.
David Dingle, Chief Executive of P&O Cruises’ parent company Carnival UK, said: “I had the honour of working for Gwyn for 14 years. He was a wonderful mentor and guide, and a truly great man. I, like so many others, owe him much, and he will be missed by so very many.”
BTN's condolences to Tricia Hughes, his soul mate, like-minded and a source of real strength at all times and particularly over the last few months.
