British Airways is to further expand its operations at London City Airport and by next summer will be operating 17 Embraer E series aircraft. Two Airbus A318 are also flown by BA mainline on the New York Kennedy service.
The airline is growing its business next year with the arrival of three new Embraer aircraft and the launch of services to Rotterdam and Florence with the start of the summer timetable.
Adam Carson, appointed in 2012 as Managing Director of BA CityFlyer, was bullish, with the airline expected to grow 10% this year to around 1.25m passengers. “Although London City was built primarily as a business airport we have seen a huge demand from our customers for more holiday destinations. We have seen growth in both the leisure and business markets and the two new routes we are launching reflects that”, he said.
From March BA will fly to 26 destinations direct from the Docklands.
The growth of the British Airways business comes as the airport seeks planning approval for a £200m expansion to accommodate up to 120,000 flight movements a year.
The proposals will also allow the airport to double its passenger numbers to six million over the next 10 years, and includes new aircraft parking stands to accommodate larger aircraft. www.ba.com www.londoncityairport.com
