Jet goes Etihad

The Jet Airways deal with Etihad Airways has gone ahead with Etihad taking a 24% stake in the Indian carrier.

This is a further step by the national airline of Abu Dhabi involving itself with a series of important carriers including Air Berlin (29.21%), Aer Lingus (2.987%), Air Serbia (49%) Air Seychelles (40%) and Virgin Australia (19.9%).  As BTN reported last week Etihad has taken a 33.3% interest in the small European carrier Darwin Airline, creating Etihad Regional.

Jet Airways was founded in 1994 and whilst it is now India’s second largest it has struggled financially in recent years. With its main hub at Mumbai it operates over 1,000 flights daily to 76 destinations worldwide.

Etihad, and all the major airlines of the Middle East, have very much focused on traffic to and from sub-continent of India.  It currently serves 10 cities in India and will clearly focus on connecting traffic and introducing new gateways.  Etihad will nominate two directors to serve on the board of Jet Airways. www.etihad.com
