Work is progressing fast to complete a major update of the Gatwick Airport South Terminal airside retail area in time for the holiday season rush at the end of the year. Also open by that time are new hotels.
Recently opened is an impressive escalator system designed to attract passengers to the mezzanine floor shops and eateries. At the top of the stairs is a Costa coffee shop already said to be the busiest in the country. By the beginning of December there will be a total of 76 stores, 11 new ones opened already this year, and 11 due for completion at that time.
Also well on the way is the revamped railway station with a seventh platform nearing completion and all having both lifts and escalators.
At present the fastest train service to London is Thameslink to London Bridge at 28 minutes, and this, together with the Kings Cross-St Pancras service is expected to speed up over the coming months as the current speed restrictions are lifted. It is likely that with any new franchise the Gatwick Express will be retained.
Directly connected to Gatwick are 129 stations but this will increase with the linking of the Peterborough/Cambridge line from Kings Cross by 2018, opening up new markets and connecting to Crossrail at Farringdon. www.gatwickairport.com
