Airport statistics

The UK Civil Aviation Authority is to be complimented on the speed in which they are now publishing airport statistics.  Long gone are the paper reports that came out months after the time in question.

The provisional August figures have already been published and show a true representation of how the airports, and in turn, the country is doing.

Overall just under 220m people use the 58 licensed airports in the United Kingdom and Channel Islands, that is 2.6% up on the rolling year.  Heathrow is currently running at 71.5m annually, Gatwick at 35m, Manchester 20m and Stansted at 17.7m.

The big success story is Southend with a rolling average of 877,000 passengers, still short of the magic one million, but starting from virtually zero in March 2012.  Also showing a dramatic growth is London City, up 10% and targeting 3.3m users for the year count, this in spite of a sale shadow over Air France-owned CityJet.  Both the major Channel Island airports showed a drop.

On the negative front Doncaster and Liverpool are equally down 10%, which must be worrying for the owner Peel Airports.  Leeds Bradford seems to be the beneficiary of the nearby Doncaster problems. www.caa.co.uk/docs
