Stansted about turn for Ryanair?

Ryanair is holding a press conference lunchtime today (16 September) in conjunction with MAN (Manchester Airport Group).  But not at a venue in the city by which it takes its name.  London’s Reuben Hotel is the selection close by Victoria Station.  Sandwiches are being offered too, an extravagant move by the cost conscious airline.  Ryanair says that it is an important briefing but has not confirmed whether its CEO will attend.  Could the long awaited US service be on?

At this stage BTN can only speculate but it does seem likely that the Irish airline will, not for the first time, do an about turn regarding an airport and increase its Stansted (which is owned by MAN) flights.  Presently it serves just over 100 destinations from the Essex airport and is responsible for around 80% of passenger throughput.

MAN purchased Stansted in February this year for £1.5bn.  Passenger traffic at 17.5m last year was the lowest since hitting a record high of 23.5m in 2007.  At present a major terminal transformation is under way.

In another move Ryanair is transferring all of its Warsaw flights from Warsaw Chopin back to Warsaw Modlin Airport from 30 September.  The shift follows completion of runway repairs at Modlin and the conclusion of a new 10-year deal with Warsaw Modlin Airport. www.ryanair.com
