AA transcontinental three-class

From 6 March next year American Airlines (AA) is to introduce a Premium three-class 102-seat Airbus A321 aircraft on two of four daily flights on its New York JFK – San Francisco service.

This is a fiercely competitive route served (according to the OAG database) with 25 flights outbound from JFK and 18 daily from Newark.  Journey time is around 6hrs 30mins.  The other operators are Delta, JetBlue (which also operates a single flight from Oakland San Francisco daily), Virgin America and United.

The AA First Class cabin will be outfitted with 10 fully lie-flat seats in a 1+1 configuration giving every seat direct aisle access – a feature that no other domestic airline offers.  Business Class will offer 20 fully lie-flat 2+2 seats, whilst in the Main Cabin the seats are arranged in a 3+3 configuration.  There is an option to enjoy more legroom with 36 Main Cabin Extra seats.

American plans to kit the entire aircraft with seat-to-seat chat, live text news and weather updates, 3-D moving maps, airport maps and connecting gate information.  For customers travelling in the premium class cabins, a complimentary in-flight entertainment selection is available.

The A321 transcontinental aircraft will replace American's existing fleet of Boeing 767-200s. www.aa.com
