Virgin Delta go-ahead

The last hurdle for the Delta Virgin ra transatlantic partnership seems to have been cleared when last Friday the US Department of Transport published what it calls a “tentative approval” saying “it would benefit passengers by providing stronger competition with existing alliances in the US – Europe market”.  See BTN 1 July

In June Delta completed a US$360m purchase of the Singapore Airlines' 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic.  The other 51% is held in Sir Richard Branson’s interests.

With the new set-up Delta Virgin will have nine daily departures to New York alone, spread over Heathrow T3 and T4 at one end, and both JKF and Newark in the New York/New Jersey conurbation.  Other destinations for the combined airlines include Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis St Paul and San Francisco.  From Manchester Delta flies to Atlanta and Virgin Miami.

Where the combined operation finishes up at Heathrow is anyone’s guess (that is if they do).  By April next year Virgin will be in T2 (Virgin Red) and T3 (Virgin Atlantic) whilst Delta is in T4.  A Virgin swop with Qatar (presently T4 and a pending member of oneworld) would be very expensive with a new Virgin Clubhouse required. www.delta.com  www.virgin-atlantic.com
