A mid-September announcement is expected from Lufthansa for about 50 wide-body jets. These are unlikely to add any more A380s (the company presently operates ten with seven outstanding).
Speculation is rife that the order will include Boeing 777 twins, the German company not operating the type, but with five freighters due from October. History shows that it has always purchased Airbus types when also ordering Boeing and this time around the A350 is pitched against various 787 derivatives.
The new wide-body planes would replace 22 Boeing 747-400s and more than 20 Airbus A340s currently in Lufthansa's fleet. The airline also operates the Boeing 747-8i and will eventually have 19 in service. www.lufthansa.com
