Doha-based Qatar Airways has really set the cat amongst the pigeons by increasing its passenger baggage allowance to 30kg in Economy (Y), 40kg In Business and 50kg in First Class, possibly the most generous of any major airline. A recent survey indicated that the 23kg limit in “Y” class sufficed for most needs.
The number of bags remains the same and dependent on the type of ticket purchased.
“Revising our standard baggage allowance comes at a time whereby the number of destinations we fly is increasing and our global reach is broadening,” said CEO Akbar Al Baker. “The number of customers we see travelling for longer periods of time, whether for business or on holiday, reflects the necessity for increased baggage allowance no matter their destination”.
New destinations this year include Gassim (Saudi Arabia), Najaf (Iraq), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Chicago (USA), Salalah (Oman), Basra (Iraq) and Sulaymaniyah (Iraq). Over the next few weeks and months, the network will grow further with Chengdu (China) 3 September, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) 18 September, Clark International Airport (Philippines) 28 October and Philadelphia (USA) 2 April 2014. www.qatarairways.com
