IAG plans to order 62 Airbus A320 series aircraft on behalf of its newly acquired Spanish airline Vueling, subject to shareholders agreement. The planes are to be delivered between 2015 and 2020 and will enable Vueling to continue expansion and replace some of its older fleet acquired during rapid growth in recent years.
At the present time Vueling has 66 Airbus A320s in service (180 passengers) and four Airbus A319s (144 passengers). The current Vueling A320s could be best described as having ‘mixed parentage’ including ex-Iberia and Clickair planes.
In addition, IAG has secured options for 58 Vueling aircraft and for a further 100 A320neo which could be used for any of the airlines in the Group – British Airways, Iberia or Vueling. (Not the vast figure used by headline grabbing national newspapers – Editor).
With the new aircraft the Vueling fleet could double by 2020. The airline's headquarters are at Barcelona El Prat Airport from where it serves nearly 100 destinations. www.vueling.com
