July figures for UK airports

Twelve months on and one obvious effect of the 2012 London Olympics is clearly with us.  Last year airports did not do so well due to scaremongering by irresponsible National newspapers with regards to the Olympics.  Dire overcrowding and lack of aircraft seats was forecast.  It just did not happen.  Athletes, officials, spectators, media and hangers-on got in and out OK.  Other travellers for the most part kept away.

Airports now announcing their July figures are reporting on average a 5% increase.  At London City Airport numbers jumped by an astonishing 25% year-on-year to a record 328,155.

Heathrow saw 6.9m passengers in July, a 5.5% increase on July 2012.  Load factors continued to be high at the same time as average aircraft size maintained its recent upward trend and is now just under 200 seats per aircraft with a load factor of 82.8%.

Gatwick moved 3.8m passengers – up by nearly 200,000 compared to 2012, a rise of 3.5% with a 88% load factor.

Glasgow Airport enjoyed its busiest July in five years after more than 832,000 travelled through its doors, plus 5.4% on July 2012.  Domestic traffic grew by 8%, benefited from the performance of BA London routes and Flybe’s UK regional services.
