Perhaps they thought it was easy but, just like the Russians, the Chinese are finding that the ability to develop a commercial aircraft only comes after years of experience. Even the knowledgeable Airbus, Boeing and now Bombardier have found it impossible to meet target dates.
The first flight of the Comac C919 narrow bodied 158-194 regional jet has now been pushed back until the end of 2015. It competes with the A320 Neo and Boeing Max. Using many European and American components the order book is said to total 380.
In a different market the AJR Fokker 100 look alike seems to be staggering along. Comac is also now the mother company.
The first flight of the C919, an Embraer 175/190 (75 to 105 seats) size aircraft, took place in September 2008 and at least four planes are engaged in the certification programme. There has been delay after delay with no service introduction date yet confirmed. The best bet is early 2014 with Chengdu Airlines the first operator. http://english.comac.cc
