American – US merger approved

US Airways Group has confirmed its shareholders' approval of the merger agreement with AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines, Inc.  The revamped airline is likely to stay with oneworld, but whether the controversial AA tail fin design remains is open to conjecture.  Doug Parker, Chairman and CEO of US Airways, and incoming CEO of the combined company appears not to be in favour.

Announcing the overwhelming positive vote Mr Parker said: "We are pleased that our shareholders overwhelmingly supported our merger with American Airlines.  This approval is a major milestone on our path to completing the merger, and we continue to make excellent progress overall thanks to the focused efforts of the dedicated representatives from both companies.  By bringing together two highly complementary networks and generating significant revenue synergies, the new American Airlines will deliver enhanced value for its shareholders".

The new American Airlines will be headquartered in Dallas-Fort Worth, as previously.

The merger is subject to regulatory approvals, other customary closing conditions and confirmation of AMR's Plan of Reorganization by the US Bankruptcy Court.  The companies expect to complete the merger in the third quarter of 2013.  US Airways operates from Heathrow to Charlotte and Philadelphia plus Manchester – Philadelphia.  American offers extensive US destinations ex-UK with BA code-shares.  www.aa.com  www.usairways.com
