An Asiana Airlines’ Boeing 777 200ER crashed on landing at San Francisco International Airport on Saturday (6 July). The plane was carrying 291 passengers and 17 crew. Two people were killed. They were sitting at the back of the aircraft.
The 777 has a very good safety record with the only major incident being on the face of it similar, that of a British Airways’ crash landing at Heathrow in 2008. This was attributed to icing problems with the fuel supply to the Rolls-Royce engines. The Asiana jet was powered by Pratt & Whitney.
“Currently we understand that there were no engine or mechanical problems”, Yoon Young-doo, Asiana’s Chief Executive, told a news conference in Seoul.
Both the pilots were said to be highly experienced. They, together with both voice and technical data retrieved from the aircraft’s ‘black box’, should offer an accurate explanation of this most unusual accident. Eyewitness accounts have in the past proved to be very emotive and far from accurate. However video evidence is likely to be found showing the aircraft’s last moments. http://flyasiana.com/english/index.htm
