Emirates adds French tennis

The annual French grand slam tournament tennis event at Roland Garros is to be sponsored by Emirates.  The Dubai-based carrier said it would back the competition, which runs just prior to the Paris Air Show in May.

The airline is also said to be on the verge of announcing a shirt sponsor deal with Real Madrid, worth it is thought, around €30m.

Emirates' interest in international sports reflects its strategy of penetrating markets globally and drawing long haul traffic through its hub in Dubai.

"As a global brand we are interested in these kinds of sports which are borderless", said the airline's President, Tim Clark.

Other partnerships include a recently extended stadium and shirt sponsorship with Arsenal and another shirt sponsorship deal at Paris St Germain.

Etihad Airways, based in Abu Dhabi, sponsors Manchester City, while Barcelona will have the Qatar Airways' name on their shirts for next season.  Delta is involved with Chelsea, Malaysia with Premier League newcomers Cardiff City whilst at the other end of the scale easyJet supports Luton Town as part of its local community efforts. www.emirates.com
