US - Europe passenger figures

Delta Airlines President Ed Bastian, gave a very interesting briefing when he was in London recently for his Aviation Club presentation. (See Virgin is here to stay in this issue of BTN)

Amongst the various topics discussed was the US – UK and US – Europe air passenger figures.

The CAA has provided us with the total UK – US numbers for 2012 (17.2m) of which 4m were between Heathrow and the two New York airports of Kennedy and Newark.  Gatwick has no services now to New York, the only alternative the common rated London City – Kennedy Business Class prestige operation which increased its carryings last year by 3% to 22,165.

Mr Bastian was able to supply numbers (below) for the continental airports which are not that easy to obtain.  Well done the sleuths at Atlanta.  The figures prove just how Heathrow is winning the transatlantic war, perhaps in spite of its deficiencies.  With Virgin Atlantic, Delta’s seat share on the New York market goes up from 25% to 36%.  He said that London was the largest international destination for business travel, three times that of Paris. www.delta.com
