New Doha International Airport to open

Usually one of the most flamboyant of carriers when it comes to making an important statement Qatar Airlines has chosen a soft opening for New Doha International Airport.

On 1 April, 10 regional and budget airlines will move across to the new facility which lies on the coast 3 miles to the east of the existing operation.  Presently not all the passenger facilities are available and the prudent approach by the authorities seems a sensible way forward.  Clearly Qatar Airways, the lead operator for the project, would also like the Boeing 787 to be the official opening aircraft for the facility and it remains to be seen if this can be co-ordinated.

The approach by Qatar for the airport/terminal has been different to that of rival Dubai.  The three-storey 600,000sq m terminal has 41 airbridge gates, six specifically designed for the Airbus A380, and 22 remote stands.  There are more than 40,000sq m of retail facilities and passenger lounges.
