Southend Airport expands

The three-phase ten million pound 90m long terminal extension project at Southend Airport is well underway, with the new arrivals area on schedule to open at the beginning of June 2013.  The airport expects to top the one million passenger target this year after exceeding 600,000 in 2012 the initial new terminal building opening last April.  Stansted was the loser.

The June opening coincides with the arrival of a fourth easyJet Airbus and the introduction of Berlin, Krakow and Newquay together with increased frequency on Alicante, Barcelona and Faro. Venice started in February with four flights weekly and is joined by Edinburgh next month, daily except Saturday

With the much expanded building later in the year will see enlargements to the security, check-in and the departure lounges.  The terminal adjoins the new Southend Airport Station, with direct services to London Liverpool Street, a project managed by the airport owner, Stobart Plc. www.southendairport.com
