Airport operators’ dinner

Keynote speaker Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport, was introduced by Ed Anderson, Chairman of the Airport Operators Association, at the annual dinner at the Grosvenor House last week.  In his opening remarks, whilst welcoming the Minister, Mr Anderson pointed out that Mr McLoughlin was the fifth appointment in five years.

Responding Mr McLoughlin made two points:

Firstly he had overcome his fear of flying.  And secondly he had hopes of staying in his position longer than his predecessor.

On a serious note Mr McLoughlin gave no indication that the Treasury would give in to tremendous pressure regarding APD.  Whilst the tax responsibility was not his, he understood the Chancellor’s requirement to maximise revenue in what he called “difficult times”.  He said that he had visited a number of regional airports and was listening to what people had to say.

Tim Clark, President of Emirates, was on hand to give away two Business Class return tickets, the prize for the Orbis flying eye hospital draw. www.aoa.org.uk www.orbis.org.uk
