Victoria Station buses

Travellers from Gatwick to Victoria Station will be pleased to learn that London Mayor Boris Johnson has confirmed that the popular 24 will become the first bus route in the capital to be served entirely by a fleet of new 21st century Routemaster style buses.

The 24 route runs from Victoria via Parliament Square, Trafalgar Square, Holborn, Euston Road and Camden to Hampstead Heath (Royal Free Hospital) and operates 24 hours a day.  There are 28,000 passengers using the route daily, and during peak hours 27 of the buses will be in service.

Plans are in place for the route to have been fully converted by the summer.

The new bus for London incorporates iconic design, echoing the historic and popular Routemaster.  It uses the most innovative and cutting edge hybrid technology and is the most environmentally-friendly bus of its kind, benefiting better passenger air quality and reducing carbon emissions.  Whether ‘health and safety’ will allow experienced passengers, as in the past, to use the rear platform (which does have a door), remains to be seen.  In the past getting on and off at traffic lights was the norm but that will probably be banned. www.tfl.gov.uk
