Korean and Gatwick

It looks like Gatwick Airport will lose its three times per week service to Seoul with effect from next Sunday (13 January).  The route was due to be suspended from that date but it is not in the summer programme just published.  Nothing has been confirmed by the airline.

Introduced with much flourish in April of last year the plan was for the new Korean Airways route to complement the carrier's long-established daily Heathrow operation.  However British Airways introduced a Seoul operation at the end of 2012 and clearly the Koreans realised that London had just too much capacity.

The loss of Korean, and during 2012 both Air Asia X and Hong Kong Airlines does put a question mark on Gatwick Airport’s long haul strategy, with Continental (now United), Delta and partially US Airways moving out in fairly recent times and both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic only using the airport for, in the main, leisure operations (see also London Airports). www.koreanair.com
