Gatwick’s Hilton, which adjoins the South Terminal (the main terminal), is undergoing a refurbishment programme, in parallel with that of the terminal itself. The revised road access is now complete and brings the entrance to this building up to the high standard of the North Terminal. The only thing now missing is decent signage. There is no way of knowing where the hotel is if you are in the terminal landside area.
Built just over 30 years ago, and with a substantial (and exceptionally quiet) annex added 10 years back, the Hilton is ideal for travellers with an early flight, the Garden Restaurant opening from 05:30. The main lobby has been refurbished and the hotel is undergoing a room renovation programme. Whilst the recently developed Amy’s Restaurant and adjoining bar are clearly popular for those who just want a coffee or light snack, Costa Coffee provides a quick and relatively inexpensive alternative within the reception area.
Under way is a £50m redevelopment of the adjoining railway station which will see a new platform, refurbished concourse, upgraded track and signalling. Construction work is expected to be completed by the end of 2013. www.hilton.com
