Niki, the scheduled low-cost division of airberlin is to adopt a branding more in keeping with the house colours of the parent airline. On 21 November the first Niki Airbus A320 in the new livery flew from Istanbul to Vienna.
Niki was founded by Niki Lauda, who in 1975 became only the second Austrian racing driver to become World Motor Racing Champion (the late Jochen Rindt being the first). He founded Lauda Air in 1979, fell out with his backers, and created Niki in 2003. It is now 100% owned by airberlin.
The new branding is part of a change of policy by the airline which is based at its Vienna International Airport hub. Six Embraer 190 aircraft are due to leave the fleet, replaced by A320 series, to give an all single-aisle Airbus fleet. www.flyniki.com
