The UK Heathrow regional slots vacated by bmi/BA have been won by Virgin Atlantic who, by the spring of next year, will be flying from Heathrow (presumably T3) to and from Aberdeen and Edinburgh operating (wet) leased Airbus A320 series aircraft.
With Manchester already awarded to Virgin, the UK CAA’s decision was to bequeath the slots was an obvious one after being unsuccessfully challenged by Aer Lingus.
Details of the operation have not yet been published but Virgin is likely to offer a very competitive service to British Airways in price terms and the product, both on the ground and in the air. If it goes two-cabin presumably executive travellers will be able to use the superb Upper Class lounge at T3 and tuck into a decent breakfast on the aircraft.
The win has been welcomed by other airlines as it breaks the current BA monopoly from the UK Provinces giving Scottish passengers more of a choice on long haul routes. The same goes for Manchester. www.virgin-atlantic.com
