BA and Puerto Rico

British Airways is to drop its service from Gatwick to Puerto Rico from April 2013.

It comes at a curious time for the Caribbean Island with a bid to become the 51st State of the US undecided after a vote on the same day as the American Presidential election.  The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is part of the United States and its citizens can hold US passports, but are not allowed to vote in the White House stakes.  Some would prefer independence.

The weekly flight from Gatwick to San Juan is to be withdrawn due to a “commercial decision” which in airline talk usually means lack of passengers.

BA said in a statement: “We review our network on an ongoing basis to ensure that all routes both support the profitability of our business and the demand of our customers.

“To optimise our network we have taken a commercial decision to cancel the once-a-week Gatwick to San Juan service from April 2013”.

The carrier only began flying to the Puerto Rican capital, via Antigua, in May 2011 when it operated twice-weekly. www.ba.com
