The opening of Berlin's new airport, Willy Brandt Brandenburg International, has been further delayed until the opening of the airlines' winter season 2013/2014, now officially on 27 October next year. In the 21st century, building an airfield is far more complex than in 1946 when the first aircraft landed at Heathrow without proper air traffic control.
Berlin is not alone with problems. The new Dubai Airport has no planned opening although it is being used for cargo flights. Likewise in Doha the promised 12/12/12 introduction has been ditched with no new date suggested.
With 27 October now at last (hopefully) fixed, airlines and staff can at least plan for the next 15 months with the existing Tegel as the Berlin gateway. The hurried closing of Tempelhof in October 2008 seems very premature. www.berlin-airport.de/en
