The Business Class only operation by Hong Kong Airlines from Gatwick is to be suspended from 10 September. In effect it was a two-class flight featuring essentially a premier service at the front end and what was more akin to the better of the Economy Plus products with semi-lie flat seats at the back.
Regular travellers on the route are saying that whilst the pricing was competitive and the connections with the Hong Kong Airlines’ route network were fine, as a product the seats and general aircraft layout did not really compete with Air New Zealand, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Virgin Atlantic, nor on the marketing incentives these carriers offered. Gatwick was attractive for some.
The history of Business Class only services is full of disasters including carriers such as Lufthansa. Only the high profile specialised British Airways flights from London City to New York currently survives, the IAG Open Skies Boeing 757 service from Paris to JFK now a three-class operation. www.hongkongairlines.com
