Delta Air Lines is to shut down its Comair subsidiary as it cuts back on what it calls low-margin regional flying. The airline, based in Boone, Kentucky, was established in 1977 and became a fully owned part of Delta 1999.
Delta said Comair, which serves midwest and east coast hubs, will cease operations on 29 September.
"While regional flying has and will remain a key component of Delta's network, customer expectations and the unit costs of regional flying have evolved", Don Bornhorst, Senior Vice President of Delta Connection, said in a memo to employees.
The company said that the shutdown will not result in major changes to Delta's network. It only accounts for about 1% of Delta's network capacity. Its 70-strong fleet is comprised entirely of Bombardier's 50-, 65- and 76-seat CRJs. How this will affect the 1,700 staff and current routes has not been made clear. www.comair.com
