The C series regional jet could be flying by the end of the year according to plane maker Bombardier. The aircraft has been sized in the 100- to 150-passenger class to compete with the smaller Airbus 320 series and similar Boeings. The company based in Montreal (Canada) says that the maiden flight is on schedule.
Since the C series was first announced, back in 2004, it has attracted just 138 orders from 11 customers, including 30 for lead airline Lufthansa. Unlike the heavier Airbus and Boeing aircraft it has excellent short runway performance and said to reach New York from London City Airport with a respectable payload.
The market is watching the timetable very closely. Recent new aircraft introductions have been delayed by years rather than months.
"We are driving for the first flight in 2012. We are working towards an entry of service for our CS-100 aircraft by the end of 2013 and by 2014 for the CS-300 aircraft", said Mike Arcamone, the newly appointed President of Bombardier's commercial aircraft unit, under which the C-Series falls. www.aero.bombardier.com
