Monarch, which calls itself “the scheduled leisure airline”, is to launch services from Gatwick to Barcelona at the start of the winter season in a challenge to incumbent airline easyJet. There will be 11 return flights per week. easyJet is five times per day for the 2hrs 20mins sector.
Monarch already serves the capital of Catalonia from Manchester. Barcelona brings the total number of scheduled destinations served by the airline from Gatwick to 13.
In keeping with its heritage Monarch customers are allocated a seat at check-in but for those wishing to select where in the cabin they sit to ensure that families and groups are seated together, seats can be pre-booked from £4.99 per one-way flight. For customers looking for added comfort, extra legroom seats are also available offering up to six inches of extra space from only £9.99. Hot meals can be booked pre-flight and the airline does not charge for the use of debit cards. www.monarch.co.uk
