Norwegian goes wi-fl

Wi-fi has come to Europe but not with one of the legacy carriers fitting a system (although Lufthansa has been dabbling since 2004 with transatlantic flights).  Norwegian, sometimes called Norwegian Air Shuttle and based just outside Oslo, is leading the way.

“Norwegian is proud to be the first airline to offer wireless internet access on board flights in Europe.  It is satisfying to be able to give our passengers the opportunity to work, read online newspapers, play games or watch online TV while flying with us. This is a product that no other airline in Europe is currently offering, which gives us a huge competitive advantage,” said Director of IT and Business Development, Hans-Petter Aanby, at Norwegian.

The aircraft are kitted out with two separate networks, one that is open for passengers and one for pilots and cabin crew.  By this coming summer 11 of the airline’s 54 aircraft Boeing 737 fleet will have internet on board and by the end of the year 21 will be equipped with the technology.  By 2012, 40 will have in-flight wi-fi.  Norwegian has not issued details regarding pricing. www.norwegian.no
