Following a ten-week consultation that saw nearly 10,000 responses, Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed permanent changes that they claim will help prevent car use from rising above pre-pandemic levels. Evidence suggests traffic was back to pre-pandemic levels prior to the most recent government advice to work from home if you can.
The main measures mean that, from 21 February, there will be no charges in the evenings after 18:00, and operating hours on weekends and Bank Holidays will reduce to 12:00-18:00. The current charge level of £15 will be retained.
It is unclear how having charges at the weekend will benefit the economy or be anything other than a tax on travel, especially given the area covered by the congestion charge zone.

Charges at the weekend are a mistake. We in the nightlife industry want customers. This will put them off. And Underground strikes don’t help.
