Heathrow 14th busiest European airport *

Traditionally easily the leader when it came to passenger throughput Heathrow has dropped to 14th for the first half of this year according to figures published by Airports Council International (ACI Europe), the airport trade body.

Its normal competitors did not fare much better with Paris CDG, dropping from 2nd to 7th place, Frankfurt (down from 3rd to 9th), and Amsterdam Schiphol (down from 4th to 10th).

The new Istanbul airport topped the list (but with traffic figures still down 62.5% compared to 2019), followed by Moscow Sheremetyevo (down 51.4%), Moscow Domodedovo (down 14%), Istanbul Sabiha Gokçen (down 47.1% – technically in Asia) and Moscow Vnukovo (down 25.9%).  See BTN 29 October 2018 ON TOUR: New Istanbul International Airport.  We were at the opening.

Across Europe’s airports passenger traffic was down 76.9% during the first half of the year compared to 2019, and 36.2% compared to 2020.

My BA Gold status changed because of one word: Heathrow. Premium pax face too much of a gauntlet to make BA attractive. Also, staff in Orly failed to tell you about best walking route to take when navigating. Sad. It would have been so easy.
