A new greener form of petrol will be available on forecourts this autumn under government plans to cut emissions – though the new fuel will probably be more expensive and is not suitable for older cars.
Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, the motor industry’s trade body, said: “The announcement today confirming E10 petrol will be available for motorists from this September is another step towards the 2050 net zero target. Its introduction is significant in that it assists with the decarbonisation of the existing UK car parc as well as those new cars powered by petrol engines.”
The Department for Transport says that unleaded petrol blended with 10% bioethanol – double the amount used at the moment – could cut carbon dioxide emissions by 750,000 tonnes a year, the equivalent of taking 350,000 cars off the road.
The government said that it would introduce a new online vehicle registration app that would allow drivers to check if their car was suitable for the new fuel. Cars built since 2011 have been required to be calibrated for E10, although most registered since 2002 can probably use it.

Good idea as long as the E10 petrol is not too expensive.
