Level flattens

IAG appears to be running down its Level low-cost operation.

Level was founded at Barcelona El-Prat airport as a budget long-haul operation in early 2017, part of a Willie Walsh initiative to deal with the growth of Norwegian and subsequently as a means of rebranding the Paris-based Open Sky operation.

Flybe’s Vincent Hodder came and went as CEO and presently in charge is Fernando Candela, with an Iberia background.

In June 2018 Level Austria was announced, based in Vienna and an Airbus A321 operator, but that has now been wound up.  The latest casualty is the Level France operation (ex-BA Open Sky) with its A330-200 aircraft.

IAG still appears intent on the acquisition of Air Europa and it only seems a question of when, rather than if, Level is withdrawn. With just three routes, Buenos Aires, San Francisco and Boston, the final winding up of an airline that will be quickly forgotten cannot be far away.

IAG CEO Willie Walsh has enough problems on his hands trying to give a smooth handover to his successor with British Airways, Cityflyer, Iberia and Vueling all facing a difficult future.
