Electric car boost

Motorists could be given a £6,000 grant to trade in petrol or diesel cars for zero-emission models under government plans to reboot the economy.

The National media is alive with the story but nothing so far has been issued by the Department for Transport.

The latest industry figures show that 22,054 battery electric cars were sold in the first five months of this year. It is up by 132% compared with a year earlier, despite the crisis. Overall sales of all cars in the UK have halved to 508,125 since the start of the year.

However, electric cars still make up only 4.3% of all new cars.

Up-front price is often cited as a key barrier to the purchase of battery-powered cars, with some models costing up to £10,000 more than combustion engine alternatives. At present the Government provides a grant of up to £3,000 to purchase plug-in cars, although it was cut by £500 in March.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that the Prime Minister was considering a £6,000 taxpayer-funded grant for people to scrap diesel or petrol cars in favour of a new electric model.  It is not known if this would be on top of the existing grant.
