COVID-19 Update

As of 23 April, over 2.6m COVID-19 cases were recorded worldwide, along with over 185,000 deaths.

  • Several countries across Africa, the Middle East and Asia implemented new measures for the month of Ramadan which began on the evening of 23 April, including relaxed curfews and new bans on public gatherings.
  • US President Donald Trump stated on 21 April he would sign an executive order to temporarily suspend the immigration for green card and working visa holders for at least 60 days.
  • On 20 April, some 700 Tunisian nationals, who had been stranded in Libya, forced open the Ras Ajdir border crossing in Tunisia to re-enter the country. Additional security forces were deployed to the border crossing, which has been closed since March due to the outbreak.
  • On 19 April, South Korean health authorities confirmed eight new COVID-19 cases, the first time that the number of new cases dropped to a single digit since 18 February. There were no reported cases in Seoul.
  • Turkey's case numbers exceeded 80,000 by 19 April, surpassing the total number of cases in neighbouring Iran.
  • Protests against COVID-19 stay at home restrictions have taken place across the US, including in California, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin, as right-wing activists demand that businesses be reopened.
  • As of 19 April, Austria, British Virgin Islands, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Czech Republic, Fiji, Finland, French Polynesia, India, Iran, Israel, Italy, New Caledonia, Norway, Poland, Slovenia and Spain have begun to allow some businesses to reopen and relax curfew hours but major restrictions on travel and public gatherings remain in place.
  • On 17 April, Chinese authorities reported an additional 325 cases and 1,290 deaths in Wuhan that had not been previously counted and included, resulting in a 50% increase from the current death toll in Wuhan alone to 3,869.
  • Amazon temporarily suspended all operations in France following a court ruling that the company must do more to protect its workers from COVID-19.
  • The National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria announced that security forces had killed 18 people while enforcing COVID-19 measures.
